Masking Hypertension with Medications is Stupid and How to Treat the Root Cause

So after years of dealing with Hypertension and running one of the biggest sites on the topic I have some good news and bad news.

First the bad news. Because I believe in giving you information which actually benefits you, not just fuzzy feel-good inspirational quotes and useless shit. So here’s the thing:

In 95% of cases, doctors have no idea what causes high blood pressure.

Yeah, there are indicators like smoking, weight and age. But if you really push them they’re generally the first to admit how little they really understand it. And this isn’t just based on one doctor or some rubbish sample. It’s well stated on WebMB[1] in fact.

Even my own doctor told me I shouldn’t read these side effects.

So, traditionally, we end up treating high blood pressure with drugs that cause side effects. Sometimes serious ones. And we’re doing this without a real understanding of the root cause.

The upshot? A lifelong prescription to drugs that screw with us, have limited effect and don’t treat the root cause.

That idea alone should be enough to raise your blood pressure.

And even if we do shift our lifestyle. Start eating healthy, working out and taking every blood pressure supplement I can find.

You can still wind up watching your blood pressure get worse and worse. Or (worse) ignoring it while it gets worse and worse.

But it’s not all doom and gloom.

We just need to change the way we look at dealing with high blood pressure. Look at the root cause and deal with it rather than just try and mask it will pills.

And that’s where Christian comes in. He originally caught my attention when his first email to me was… quite abrupt.

My blood pressure used to average 185/129.

Like you, I was almost guaranteed to suffer a heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, or some other sudden death brought on by high blood pressure.

When someone emails you before you’ve had your morning coffee to remind you that you’re likely to die painfully it catches your attention. Yeah, Christian might be abrupt but he does know what he’s talking about.

But it wasn’t until the American Heart Association put out a study that found some stupidly simple ways of reducing blood pressure.

They didn’t cure it entirely but it some daft things like breathing slowly for 6 minutes a day dropped the test groups average blood pressure from 150/83 to 141/78.

Cool, but not a complete game changer.

But it did open a complete can of worms. It got people looking for actual solutions that didn’t involve pills and side effects.

It got people reducing their blood pressure in just weeks to way safer levels with relatively easy things you can do from home. And all because people started to actually look at the problem rather than just mask it with pills.

And let’s be clear here. I’m not saying you should sit around and chant ‘OM’ until your blood pressure lowers.

I’m a firm believer in science-based evidence. Holistic treatments are snake oil with people praying on the desperate. You know what they call holistic medicine which actually works? Medicine.

So we’re talking proper scientific studies saying this makes an actual difference.

This really should have been news when it first came out. But, nobody really seemed to care.

I’m really not a conspiracy nut kind of guy but part of me thinks it’s because there’s no money in things people can do from home. If a pharma company comes out with an expensive new pill you can bet it’ll be on the evening news.

But I digress. Whatever the reason, it’s not the point here.

In all my time writing, curating and working on Hypertension Professor I’ve spoken to a lot of people dealing with it. I’m not a doc (and I don’t pretend to be) but I’d say I’ve had a lot of experience.

But Christian blows me out of the water.
